Gastonia police urged people to avoid an area near downtown on Wednesday amid reports that someone had barricaded with a weapon near downtown, and that shots were fired. On social media, police told the public to avoid the North Pryor Street and Airline Avenue area. “Officers are shutting down many of the neighboring streets as a precaution,” the post said. “The Erwin Park Community Center will be shut down this afternoon until things are resolved.” Two neighbors started shooting at each other with assault rifles at about 9:30 a.m., Cassandra Byrd said in an interview with The Charlotte Observer. Byrd runs Gastonia Freedom School, an alternative learning center for students with autism and other learning disabilities. Three students were inside when shooting started next door. It was their last day of classes. This is a developing story. Check for updates at the link in our bio. ✍️: Ryan Oehrli, Jeff A. Chamer and Julia Coin 📹: Jeff A. Chamer and Chloe Scofield
